A Brief History of Women’s Education in Tamil Nadu

Education is something many of us take for granted today. At times, we even see it as a burden. But the truth is, the freedom, confidence, and independence that education gives women today did not come easily.

In 1901–1902, around 106,855 girls were studying at the primary level in the Madras Presidency. In higher education, the numbers were shockingly low. Between 1897 and 1902, only three women from South India earned an M.A. degree from Madras University, and in 1901–02, just one woman qualified for a B.A. degree. These numbers clearly show that society at the time was not supportive of girls pursuing higher education.

Realizing this gap, the State Government of Madras began to treat the expansion of primary education as one of its most important duties. In 1911, an attempt was made by Gopal Krishna Gokhale to introduce compulsory primary education for both boys and girls. This was followed by the Calcutta University Commission (1917), which strongly emphasized the need for women’s higher education.

By 1946–47, these efforts showed results. There were 1,776 elementary schools for girls, with 2,34,497 girl students enrolled. This meant that 52.5% of girls aged 6–11 were attending school. At the higher education level, there were five women’s colleges in the state, educating around 1,236 women.

After Independence, women’s education grew even stronger. In 1948, the University Education Commission, led by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, addressed key issues in higher education, including women’s access. From the 1950s, women’s colleges saw better libraries, laboratories, hostels, and playgrounds. In 1956, higher education was reorganized, creating clearer degree and postgraduate pathways.

Institutions like Ethiraj College for Women, Queen Mary’s College, Lady Doak College, and Nirmala College played a major role in this journey. Alongside educational reforms, social reformers, writers, and women’s organizations worked to break social barriers and uplift women across Tamil Nadu.
