Fatal Overnight Shooting in Akron, Ohio: 2 Handguns, 35 Shell Casings Recovered

Authorities in Akron, Ohio, are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday, resulting in one death and 24 injuries. The incident unfolded during a birthday party attended by over 100 people, which spilled into the street, leading to multiple altercations. According to police, no suspects are currently in custody.

  • Scene Description: More than 35 shell casings were found across a block-long crime scene, indicating a potential drive-by shooting that may have prompted return fire from partygoers.
  • Police Statement: Akron Police Chief Brian Harding, who took office last week, indicated the shell casing layout suggested shots fired from a moving vehicle, with possible return fire from individuals at the party.

  • Victim Details: One victim, 27-year-old Lateris Cook, was identified by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office. Two victims remain in critical condition. The injured ranged from 19 to 43 years old, predominantly in their 30s.

A reward of $22,500 has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction, contributed by Summit County Crime Stoppers, the U.S. Marshals Office, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
